The second
week of December welcomes the return of the Beach Polo Cup, now in its ninth year. This two day event of sporting and fun with some of the region’s leading polo teams and the early arrival of a first-ever Holiday Market. While the VistaJet Bombardier has claimed victory at many past tournaments, last year saw Team Nissan LEAF take home the winning trophy.
Audience will get to see the fierce competition for first place that continues in 2018, as more teams and strong competition up the ante year after year. This year the Shams Public Zone is free to enter and is going to host a line up of delicious food stalls to turn the day into an outdoor picnic. Alternatively, one can buy tickets to the VIP Majlis Zones, which include an F&B spread. Sponsored by Tonino Lamborghini and presented by Oriental Pearls, The Beach Polo Cup is held under the Patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council.
The Beginning of
Beach Polo started on the sands of Dubai. ‘They play Polo on grass. They play Polo on snow. So we are going to play Polo on the beach.’ Earlier Polo was only perceived as a grass based sport, played on fields so large that the spectators could not enjoy the game to the fullest. This changed with the creation of Snow Polo St. Moritz. In 2004, for the very first time Beach Polo was birthed on the sands of Dubai, the innovative idea came to life and Beach Polo was born.
In September 2014 Beach Polo Cup Dubai received the official Patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Sports Council. This has further elevated the recognition of the sport on a local and international level. Beach Polo has helped increase the understanding of the sport, changed the perception of traditional Polo and also. it has become more than just a sport, challenging the limits and elevating the standard of the game. This results in pure excitement and entertainment that the sport offers, a fun thrilling experience to be enjoyed by all, not just Polo enthusiasts.
Playing
on a smaller field made the sport very competing and more intense. It gives the spectators a personal experience of the pure battle between teams and players. The purpose built area has been designed to allow spectators to be part of the action. More than just a sport, Beach Polo offers the audience a modern take on an old and privileged social experience. While it does and always will maintain the prestige that traditional Polo deserves in many ways, it is more relaxed and accessible to a younger and trendier crowd.
