Sisi’s Eatery, an Austrian restaurant opens in Dubai Hills Mall

by DubaiCity Author

Sisi’s Eatery had a soft launch in September and officially opened on October 5, 2022. A month after its opening, it has already made its mark as one of the few Austrian restaurants in Dubai. Sisi’s serves authentic dishes with a twist — including a kaiserschmarrn station — alongside traditional baked goods, speciality coffees and plenty of cake. It is indeed true that, while there are a handful of German restaurants and bakeries around town, the cuisine from neighbouring Austria has never really come into its own in the UAE.

Sisi specialises in Viennese cuisine; the all-day diner prides itself on serving handcrafted cuisine, baked goods and speciality coffee. Come for breakfast and stay for the cakes. A morning highlight is the Austrian breakfast platter with scrambled eggs, cold cuts, cheese, Liptauer, pickles, Austrian jam, honey, and butter. Breakfast is a large part of the offering at Sisi’s. The Weiner schnitzel is the star dish from the menu’s savoury section. The breaded and pan-fried cutlet is offered at Sisi’s in veal, turkey or chicken and is served alongside a traditional potato salad.

The menu includes salads, soups, sandwiches, plates of pasta and risotto. If you want to dive first into the cuisine, we recommend the Austrian classics such as zucchini strudel, Austrian mountain cheese tortellini, spinach dumplings and chanterelle mushroom goulash. The aforementioned kaiserschmarrn, for example, is a popular dish to start the day with, especially in cooler months. Made from shredded pancake, fruit compote and hazelnut spread, it satisfyingly ticks both the breakfast and sweet boxes.

Last but certainly not least, Sisi’s serves a great selection of desserts — including 50 varieties of cakes. A must-try is the classic Viennese sachertortereinterpreted here into a Sacher dome and presented in a glazed chocolate shell with a homemade apricot filling and topped with edible wildflowers. As for Sisi’s Eatery’s name, it is inspired by the 19th-century Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Aged 16, she was nicknamed Sisi and married Emperor Franz Joseph I, and was famous for her good looks, rebellious streak and love of cake. Rumour has it that she had a spiral staircase built to eat her treats in privacy. For that reason, you’ll even find a spiral staircase inside the restaurant.
