The Dubai Opera is all set to open on August 31 with a performance by the legendary Spanish tenor Placido Domingo.
The concert venue located in Downtown Dubai made an announcement about the line-up for its first season. This will continue to run until the end of 2016, and will feature Plácido Domingo’s Three Tenors colleague, Catalan tenor Jose Carreras, who will showcase his final tour, A Life in Music, to the UAE.
Plácido Domingo has been featuring on the world’s stages for more than half a century. After featuring over 4,000 singing and conducting engagements till date have made him visit all across the globe, from leading opera houses to historic concerts celebrating some of the greatest international events.
Described in the international press as “the King of Opera,” “a true renaissance man in music” and “the greatest operatic artist of modern times”, Dubai Opera is going to be a part of the world’s greatest venues as it welcomes this legendary star alongside Grammy Award winning soprano Ana Maria Martínez.
Plácido Domingo and Ana Maria Martínez will be accompanied by the orchestra of Teatro Lirico “Giuseppe Verdi”, Trieste, conducted by Maestro Eugene Kohn.
Close to 49 performances will include those by Grammy-winning sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar, and Emirati singer Hussain Al Jassimi. A three-act opera called The Pearl Fishers, by the French composer Georges Bizet, will give an ode to Dubai’s heritage.
Opera lovers can listen to Gioachino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, other highlights include Opera without Words, an evening of Italian Opera’s greatest overtures and interludes performed by the group Fondazione Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi and conducted by Francesco Quattrocchi.
Also one must look out for Giselle performed by The Russian State Ballet and Orchestra of Siberia, which is considered as one of the great romantic ballets. This was first performed in 1841 and is based on the love of a peasant girl who passes away with a broken heart after learning that her lover is engaged to another. The Russian State Ballet and Orchestra of Siberia, Coppelia is going to offer Leo Delibes’ striking score. This is a family ballet based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann about an strange toymaker who has constructed a life-sized doll, Coppelia, and daydreams of her coming to life. The Mozart Gala will be performed by Vienna Concert Verein and then Postcards from Vienna takes the next feature, and Impossible, famous as the ‘most dangerous show’ the city has ever seen, featuring illusionists on stage. Spain’s Flamenco superstar, Sara Baras will be seen at Dubai Opera with Voces, Suite Flamenca, a feature that pays tribute to six flamenco luminaries. Audiences will also get to watch the acclaimed show The Nutcracker on Ice and theatrical spectacle Slava’s Snowshow.
