The story of Nando’s began hundreds of years ago with the first Portuguese explorers who got out to sail for the East looking for the legendary spice route. They landed on the shores and discovered the African Bird’s Eye Chilli or as we know it, PERi-PERi. After years later, Nando’s restaurants came up with delicious sauces and their world-famous grocery range around the globe. One afternoon in 1987, two friends were having lunch at a humble Portuguese eatery and they decided to share it. PERi-PERi has travelled a journey – from Rosettenville to the world. Their name Nando’s originates from Fernando, the name of one of the founders of the chain – Fernando Duarte. He and a friend, Robert Brozin, bought a restaurant called Chickenland in Rosettenville, near Johannesburg in 1987. This became the first Nando’s restaurant, which incorporated influences by former Portuguese colonists from Mozambique, many of whom had settled on the south-eastern side of Johannesburg. As a result, Nando’s is sometimes still referred to as Nando’s Chickenland.
