Showcasing Dubai in an exceptional and creative manner, home-grown retail concepts, the fifth edition of Market Outside the Box (MOTB) was conducted at Burj Park in Downtown Dubai. MOTB is a free-to-enter market that is organised by Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE) as an initiative to encourage bright, local entrepreneurs, designers and businesses – is conducted every year.
The annual MOTB, which has become an integral part of the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) features many promising and talented regional designers, showcasing a few of the best home-grown and artisanal products from independent retailers across the city. Right from fashion to jewellery, there are assortments of striking pieces for fashion followers to learn at this year’s MOTB. Just like every year, there are many food trucks, while the health conscious people can browse a number of meal plan companies. All those who are looking to attach a distinctive touch to their homes can find many one-off soft furnishings and home accessories. In addition to the exciting line-up of retailers each year at MOTB, there are many activities such as Pilates classes and an outdoor cinema, as well as entertainment including a fascinating magician and hip hop performances and a DJ. The event also adds bedtime story-reading sessions for children to enjoy every night.
“With the weather being perfect for an outdoor market, MOTB offers shoppers a different kind of shopping experience. It’s a great platform offering a peep into the home-grown businesses dealing in niche products. Consumers can connect with some bright local entrepreneurs that participate in this pop-up market every year, moving beyond the regular options at the shopping malls. The idea is to have home-grown concepts represented at MOTB that don’t have a physical presence. They either operate online or as home-based businesses,” says Suhaila Saqer Obaid Ghubash, director of events and festivals, DFRE.
In these years, an assessment of the success of MOTB lies in the fact that numerous of the participating concepts can work together with established retailers. Just last year, for example, a few outstanding features were there at MOTB, which has created a space within the likes of Robinsons and Bloomingdale’s. The 5th edition of Market Outside The Box was launched during Dubai Shopping Festival 2018.
Market OTB has truly become the ‘Centre of Now’ building upon the prestige of Downtown Dubai and giving everyone the opportunity to be part of this creative cultural movement. MOTB provides emerging designers with a supreme platform to showcase and sell their products to a huge customer base during Dubai’s famous retail season, the Dubai Shopping Festival. MOTB vendors range from local to international emerging brands, set side by side in an effort to draw influence from across the planet and highlight the DFRE mandate to encourage grassroots retail growth and nurture local creative talent. Their event feature brands and a packed program of activities ranging from onstage performances in Live Bands, Solo Performances, DJ’s and even classes of Yoga and well being.
