Nabil F. Safwat’s second exhibition at Total Arts presents his most recent canvases of the desert and the sea of the Emirates. Landscape painting is a theme that has at all times fascinated Safwat. The landscape of the UAE has been his motivation in the last 13 years that he has been living in Dubai.
Total Arts, formed by founder Dariush Zandi has encouraged and offered a creative stage at a time when the Dubai arts scene was beginning to first develop. It has subsequently established itself as an educational platform, raising consciousness of both local and international artistic talent.
The Iraqi painter Nabil Safwat has skillfully captured, on his canvases, the sensitivity of the UAE’s landscape. He has a few showcasing coastlines and rocky areas giving the illusion of a mirage on the horizon and also the way moonlight reflects on the sea at midnight.
Safwat has painted these scenes showing gratitude, he says, “I’ve been in the UAE for 11 years and its landscapes, many of which few people here see, really are remarkable.”
The artist has created his own unique style, he has a career as a noted scholar of Islamic art and the calligraphy of the Muslim world. This show at Total Arts represents his paintings, despite having worked on some of these images for the past 10 years.
“I was amazed at the quality of work that he had,” says Dariush Zandi, the director of Total Arts. “He’s a serious oil-on-canvas painter. Something of his work immediately reminded me of the British masters, such as Turner.”
The celebrated scholar of the region has artistic history in his vision, and in a distinct visual language: “In Islamic culture, honouring the word is part of the tradition but we are not very adept in the Middle East in landscape painting.”
Zandi summarises Safwat’s work: “We’ve had artists pass through the UAE and paint its landscapes in the manner of where they come from. But Safwat’s style is here, and all here.”
Total Arts is the brainchild of Dariush Zandi architect, photographer, writer and designer who has his own gallery and a photographic studio known as Total Design at the Courtyard. Total Arts is one of the galleries operating from Courtyard, which is situated alongside Sheikh Zayed Road and has been in operation since 1996.
