From Time Out Dubai City Guide With so many textile shops in Dubai,
it makes financial sense to buy material here and have it made up
into the style of your favourite trousers or shirt. Tailors can
copy from an original item or from a pattern, with simple designs
costing about Dhs30 and taking only a day or two to complete. A
good tailor will advise on how much cloth you need (buy a little
extra to be on the safe side) and offer you at least one fitting
before the final stitching. If you’re not completely happy
with the way your finished garment looks, don’t be shy to
ask them to make alterations.
For a good range of textile shops in
a single area, head to Al Fahidi Street in Bur Dubai (the two listed
below are the best). It’s a good place to pick up material
for your suit, shirt or skirt. Most of the shops close around lunchtime,
so get there early in the morning or late afternoon. Avoid taking
a car, as parking is a nightmare and the one-way road is guaranteed
to be congested with taxis, pedestrians and cyclists. If you get
caught short of cash there are ATM machines and a Thomas Cook exchange
bureau.
