WWF Celebrates First Year Of HSBC Eco-Schools Climate Initiative

HSBC Bank Middle East Ltd. and Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF) today announced the national winners of HSBC Eco-Schools Climate Initiative's Eco-Code competition, where pupils from 20 schools across the UAE illustrated their dedication to reducing their schools' impact on the environment.
One year on since the launch of the Eco-Schools programme in the UAE, schoolchildren are showcasing their commitment to making real changes for their planet through a poster exhibition at Dubai Knowledge Village. These imaginative posters highlighted their eco friendly attitudes and behaviour that can consistently inspire concrete action within their school and beyond.
The winners of the competition from the age 13 – 18 years category - Elizabeth Teng (Dubai International Academy), Stefy Anna Anijan (Our Own English High School, Sharjah), Laila Tamraz (Raffles International School, Dubai); and from the age 5 – 12 years category - Sascha Malek (GEMS World Academy, Dubai), Hamdan Mohamed Saeed Mohamed (Al Hala Primary School for Boys, Fujairah) and Nasser Abdulla Al Ketbi (Dubai international School, Nad Al Sheba), were announced today and prizes given away by H.E. Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al Nuaimi, environmental advisor to the Ajman Government who is also known as the 'Green Sheikh'.
The HSBC Eco-Schools Climate initiative in the UAEis a partnership between EWS-WWF, HSBC, Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and UAE's Ministry of Education. Helping the schools achieve in the programme is a team of staff volunteers from HSBC.
Ida Tillisch, Acting Director General of EWS-WWF said: "As a UAE representative of FEE, EWS-WWF has been working closely with HSBC volunteers and the Ministry of Education to implement The HSBC Eco-Schools Climate Initiative. This programme is a fantastic process of engaging young people in caring about the environment. They are given information and practical tips to take action to lower their school's carbon emissions and empower them to make real differences to the world we live in."
Ammar Shams, Regional head of Corporate Sustainability, HSBC Bank Middle East Ltd. said : "Our volunteers have been extremely impressed by the dedication of the schoolchildren. From forming an Eco-Schools committee and drawing up an action plan to involving the wider community, pupils participating in the initiative have the opportunity to directly influence environmental savings made at their schools."
The international programme, operating in 18 countries encourages schools to curb their carbon emissions following the Eco-Schools 7 – Step Methodology that requires them to form eco-committees, conduct audits, make action plans, monitor and evaluate, among other steps.
The Eco-Code posters by Elizabeth Teng (Dubai International Academy) and Sascha Malek (GEMS World Academy, Dubai) will now go through to the international round to compete against participants from the remaining 17 countries for a chance to win awards for their schools.
