West Cheshire College tourism students experience Dubai culture
  24 May 2011

TRAVEL and tourism students were given the opportunity to experience a different culture and way of living, through an educational trip to Dubai.

Organised as part of their course at West Cheshire College, the trip sought to cover units in human resources, living and working overseas and the development of the tourist destination.

In all, 23 students from the Travel and Tourism OCR Extended Diploma, as well as three tutors, took part in the four-day visit which gave students the opportunity to talk and meet with hotel, airline and airport staff.

Travel and tourism tutor Heather Tinker, who organised the visit, said: "Last year we took students to New York and whilst that was an amazing experience, this year we decided that we wanted the students to experience a completely different culture from our own.

"Dubai is a beautiful country and we managed to fit many activities into the four days – we visited three luxury hotels for tours with their staff, including the world famous seven star hotel Burj Al Arab.

"We also went to the Wild Wadi Water Park for a 45 minute educational talk with the human resources manager and we visited the Sheikh's Palace and the Emirates Mall, the largest shopping centre in the Middle East.

"Not only did the students learn a great deal about Muslim culture but they also received first-hand knowledge from some of the best hotels in the world. It was a pleasure to take them to such a vibrant country."

Molly Griffiths, 19, from Ellesmere Port, one of the students on the trip, said: "I thoroughly enjoyed the educational visit to Dubai. I got to see so many fabulous sights as well as experience a culture very different to my own.

"It was the trip of a lifetime and I would like to thank my tutors at West Cheshire College for giving me such a great opportunity."

The two-year courses aims to give students relevant occupational experience, knowledge and skills, as well as learning about worldwide travel locations, customer service and planning and managing a travel and tourism event.
