Making its international debut, TCS IT Wiz, India's biggest IT quiz competition, will come to Dubai to test the wits of young minds when it comes to their knowledge in Information Technology.
The inter school IT quiz will be held in Dubai on April 30 at the Shaikh Rashid Auditorium, Indian High School. The competition will feature students from Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi. The quiz is an initiative of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Asia's largest IT firm that offers IT services, consulting and business solutions.
Khaleej Times spoke to Girish Ramachandran, Vice-President and head of Middle East, Africa and Mediterranean Operations for Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) about the idea behind the phenomenal quiz.
"The aim of the quiz is to build awareness, hone IT skills and encourage students to get excited about IT besides providing a window to the world of IT. The focus is also to drive the importance of technology in student's life and equip them to compete globally," said Girish.
Focusing on practical application of Information Technology across various sectors and wide-ranging topics which include: World of Internet and unique web sites, IT buzzwords and acronyms, personalities, international and national communication companies, software products, companies and brands, the history of IT and also the humorous side of IT.
The focus will also be on areas where IT has made an impact —education, entertainment, books, multimedia, music, movies, internet banking, advertising, sports, gaming, social networking, cell phones etc. Additionally, there will be an exclusive round on TCS.
"The entire universe of cyberspace battles it out in the form of questions. It includes the past, present and future of computing," Girish added.
The quiz is unique as it is not a memory testing one. It is more of application of thought, involves lateral thinking and even the rounds of the quiz are completely software-based.
"The UAE is a good market for TCS. Keeping in mind the education system in the UAE, the large expat population base, number of schools and the level of education, we felt a need to extend this initiative. It will also further contribute to the education system in the country and help create an alternative tool for teaching technology concepts to the students. The event is also a part of our CSR activity."
The quiz is divided into two rounds. First will be the prelims, which has a common set of 20 questions for all the teams at the venue. Questions would be oral, visual and audiovisual.
Top six teams from the prelims would qualify for final round.
Only the best team from each school will be called on stage in the event of multiple teams from the same school qualifying for the final.
Girish added: "Giri Balasubramaniam, popularly known as Pickbrain, has been the quiz master since its inception in 1999. He heads Greycaps India Pvt Ltd; India's largest on stage Quiz Company, headquartered in Bangalore."
All participants of the quiz will be given a certificate and an IT Quiz book. The UAE winners will walk away with exciting prizes including a Tablet PC each. The winners and the runners up will be also rewarded with prizes and trophies.
The six finalists will receive an array of prizes from TCS ranging from backpacks, MP3 players, headphones, USB pen drives, laser pointers and more.
More than 150 schools have been invited to participate in the event and there are plans to make this an annual event. Through the quiz, TCS wants to establish IT's role in the society.
Girish said: "IT plays an integral role today and is a key enabler for success in diverse fields. This is the first time that TCS IT Wiz has been taken out of India. We plan to extend this to Qatar, Saudi Arabia etc. in the future."
Students can send their entries through their respective institutions by email at contactus@tcsitwiz.com on or before April 27.
TCS IT Wiz, started in 1999, became a benchmark in the inter-school quizzing circuit for the level of research, the intensity with which teams compete and the sheer numbers it draws. The quiz is currently held in several cities across India. This year the quiz will be conducted in 12 cities - Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kochi, Lucknow, Pune and Mumbai.
