  Royal weddling: Dubai's big bash
  28 April 2011

As Prince William and Catherine "Kate" Middleton practise their "I do", British expats in Dubai are preparing to celebrate the royal nuptials of Britain's second in line to the throne to his longtime sweetheart on April 29.

From a Street Party thrown on the lawns of the British Embassy, to a travel deal in the UK's Daily Mail to celebrate the royal wedding in Dubai, the emirate's British community isn't short of entertainment options for the big day.

Classic extravaganza

Cashing in on the wedding are the city's hotels. While the Equestrian and Polo Club are hosting a Royal Wedding Polo match, complete with The House of Middleton vs The House of Windsor line-up, the Arabian Courtyard's Royal Wedding Street Party will be a three-day affair with food which even Her Majesty would be proud of, they claim.

Amongst the most extravagant give-aways of the day is an exact replica of Middleton's engagement ring, the diamond and sapphire ring originally worn by Princess Diana, courtesy Diwan Jewels in Dubai.

The royal theme was stepped up a notch by Raffles when Sarah Omolewu, the hotel's PR manager, sent out a bride and groom with the likeness of Prince William and Kate Middleton in a classic tail-coat and white wedding gown respectively — complete with a two-tier wedding cake — to invite VIP guests to the hotel's Royal Raffles Roast on Friday.

Other hotels cashing in on the royal trend include Madinat Jumeirah with a House of Commons at Bazar and House of Lords at Bahri and Koubba Bar, Hilton Dubai Jumeirah with a Regal High Tea; Le Meridien Mina Seyahi for a Great British Royal beach party in Barasti; Crowne Plaza Dubai for a Royal Spread at Harvesters; and a Royal Vintage brunch at The Address Downtown.

And it's not just hotels that are going over the top with the royal wedding.

The British Embassy will be hosting its own Street Party on the lawns of the consulate in Dubai. Invitees and guests have been asked to "come and join the Royal Wedding celebrations in the garden of the British Embassy on April 29, from 11.30am onwards".

At Dh100 a ticket, guests are asked to bring their own picnic baskets, although vouchers can be exchanged for refreshments.

Says Guy Warrington, British Consul General, "We are delighted to be marking the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton with a special event in Dubai. We have lots in store including a traditional street party and VIP marquee and hope all our guests will enjoy the celebrations with us."

Meanwhile, students of Dubai British School will be holding their own street party on Thursday afternoon from 12 noon onwards.

With the wedding just hours away, worldwide searches on Yahoo for the ‘royal wedding' have increased by over eight million per cent since the announcement of the engagement. The global viewership is expected to be over two billion - more than twice that of William's father Prince Charles' wedding to Diana in 1981.

From all the ongoing promotions, perhaps the most intriguing was an article spotted on the Daily Mail website in their Travel Section, where British residents are invited to commemorate the royal wedding in true British style at the Atlantis Hotel, Palm Jumeirah, with packages from £1,239 (Dh7,513) per person, including return airfare on British Airways, three nights' accommodation with breakfast at the Atlantis and all pre-paid taxes.

Could it be that the celebrations in Dubai have begun to outweigh the celebrations in London? What with reports of Middleton's bikini buying spree in preparation for her honeymoon, XPRESS wouldn't be surprised to find the royal couple honeymooning on the sandy beaches of Dubai soon.

Online alert

IT security giant Norton has warned against cyber criminals looking to steal personal information and links to harmful sites on the back of a deluge of online activity surrounding the royal wedding.
