UOWD students collect aid for Pakistan flood relief
  23 August 2010

Students of the University of Wollongong in Dubai, led by the Pakistani Student Association UOWD, collected relief goods and cash during a three-day flood relief campaign held on the University campus in Dubai Knowledge Village.

Students contributed food items, clothing and cash to join a humanitarian effort to help Pakistan tackle one of the worst floods in its history.

"Initially we were worried that our efforts would be futile considering that the number of students enrolled in the summer semester is relatively small. However, we decided to go ahead, as we believe charity events are more about putting in best efforts and not about the size of the contribution or participation,"said Franky Barreto, Acting Manager, Student Services, UOWD.

Mobisher Rabbani, a philathropist and founder of the Rabbani Foundation was on campus to support the Pakistani Student Association in the campaign. The goods collected were transported by the members of the PSA to the Pakistan Association Dubai in Bur Dubai and the cash was presented to the Pakistan Youth Flood Relief Campaign to purchase food and other necessities for the affected people.

The response to the campaign was highly positive and (approximately 141,910 Pakistani Rupees) was collected, along with several cartons of food supplies, blankets, shampoos, soaps and clothing for men, women and children. The items were sorted by the members of the PSA before being packed into the cartons and sent to the Pakistan Association of Dubai.

"It was very heartwarming to watch students of different backgrounds, culture, nationality and age groups participating in the campaign to support a humanitarian cause," said Mr. Baretto.

The success of this event has motivated the PSA to organise another charity campaign during the autumn semester which would be on a much bigger scale, in order to provide help to the flood victims on a continuous basis.

The event was organized by the committee heads of the PSA, Javeria Shamim (Vice President), Sarah Naeem Jamil (Secretary), Sabeen Irfan (Treasurer) and active members Sehrish Zafar, Farhina Fakher and Mohammad Ali Ashtarian.
