Eco-friendly activities held across Dubai

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) commemorated Earth Day 2011 by engaging young members of the community in fun activities and environmentally-conscious role-play during a family open day for Dewa employees, their children and participating schools at Kidzania, in The Dubai Mall.
Held on Sunday, the event encouraged children of all ages to participate activities including arts & crafts workshops, painting, collective pledging, songs, plant-a-seed activity, environment reporting & broadcasting, creative recycling and an eco-fashion show in which the young models wore designs made from recycled products.
On this occasion, Saeed Mohamed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dewa said, "The young play an important part in DEWA's environmental strategy and we lay special attention to building conservation initiatives and campaigns that raise awareness and educate youth and children on the importance of energy conservation. It is through educating in an entertaining and memorable way that we will secure a sustainable and healthy world for generations to come."
Dewa has also established an on-line edutainment club called the ‘Splashy and Sparky Club,' www.snsclub.ae, filled with activities and purposeful ‘green' content, represented by colourful Dewa mascots Splashy and Sparky.
Children's City
Children's City on Thursday observed Earth Day with activities such as face painting, workshops, lectures, and other events to promote environmental awareness among children.
Nila Al Mansouri, acting head of the Children's City said, "Earth Day reminds us of our common responsibility towards the planet which we live as we want a cleaner and more pure air and water that should not be destroyed."
She said it is important to raise awareness among young people on local environmental issues and encouraging them to find practical solutions to these issues and participating in activities.
"It is also our aim to enhance environmental awareness and care the planet by changing our way of life to become more in line with the environment," added Al Mansouri.
Photo exhibit
An environment photo exhibition was organised by Canon Middle East in cooperation with Dubai Internet City (DIC) and Emirates Wildlife Society (WWF) to mark Earth Day.
The exhibition in DIC featured selected environmental conservation-themed photos from WWF's Global Photo Network in a move to raise environmental awareness among DIC's residents and visitors.
