May 6, 2011 Dubai Women's College (DWC), a Higher Colleges of Technology flagship institution, hosted this week 12 Afghan entrepreneurs committed to building businesses in order to create jobs in Afghanistan.
During a five-day event held at DWC, the entrepreneurs received training provided by the Bpeace volunteers from Microsoft, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Ogilvy, and DWC faculty in marketing, accounting, and human resources.
The program is facilitated by the Business Council for Peace (Bpeace), the award-winning New York-based international network of business volunteers that helps people in conflict-affected countries build sustainable businesses. Their slogan, "more jobs mean less violence" highlights the mission of their program. The Afghan female and male entrepreneurs were accompanied by four American business executives who are part of Bpeace's volunteer network that are consulting and coaching the Afghans over a three-year period.
In addition to educating the participants on practical business knowledge, DWC helped organize site visits to Dubai's small to mid-size businesses directly related to the businesses in which the Afghan entrepreneurs operate.
During the site visits, participants met with business owners and management and discussed best practices they have enacted to provide better quality products and received advice on how to build a sustainable business. "Meeting and working with the Afghan entrepreneurs was an inspiration for our students and faculty. Their determination, persistence and commitment to further develop their communities are outstanding and we cannot find better role models to teach us real entrepreneurship," said Dr. Howard Reed, Senior Director at the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCTHCTLoading...) and Director at DWC.
The participating Afghans currently own and run businesses in construction, kitchen accessories, manufacturing, electrical inspection, business consulting, beauty services, Internet services, and radio broadcasting. "Economic development and job creation is essential in order to create sustainable peace; the empowerment of entrepreneurs is key to this noble initiative," said Dr. Monica Gallant, Business Department Chair at DWC.
Toni Maloney, Bpeace CEO, has led her organization's economic development activities in Afghanistan since 2003. "We have been a witness to, and a participant in, the evolution of Afghan business, and especially women entrepreneurs. Dubai Women's College is a trusted and vital partner in helping these courageous Afghans address the barriers to business growth and seize the opportunities to expand. DWC, Bpeace and the Afghan entrepreneurs are all aligned in the belief that creating jobs creates peace."
Bpeace's work in Afghanistan receives partial financial support of the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
