Dubai school students to mark Earth Day

As the world celebrates Earth Day Friday, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) has urged Dubai's schoolchildren to go green and to respect the environment.
Schoolchildren across the city are celebrating the global Earth Day as part of a long-term programme to raise awareness about their role in protecting our precious planet.
The Education for Sustainable Development Task force, made up of representatives from many departments of Dubai Government, is supporting initiatives which focus on educating young people.
The task force, co-ordinated by the KHDA, has identified its priorities as — biodiversity, green schools, climate change and awareness events.
The KHDA representative on the Task force, CEO of Dubai Schools Agency, Fatma Al Merri, said: "It is very important that all of our children understand how they can help to protect the planet".
She said this ranges from small acts like picking up litter to bigger things like lifestyle choices and the design of buildings and transportation systems.
Respect
"We hope our education programmes will help our children to grow up with respect for their environment and ... protect it for future generations."
Meanwhile, over 650 students of the Raffles International School, South Campus planted 36 trees on the school campus as part of its support of the Emirates Environmental Group [EEG] Million Tree Campaign, in the context of the United Nations Billion Tree Campaign.
As part of the campaign which coincides with the International Earth Day, Raffles students — from nursery to high school, joined teachers, employees and parents to plant trees.
The New Arab Unity School (NAUS), has announced week-long activities. A school spokesperson said activities will include tree planting, lectures and an exhibition.
