The Dubai Police will launch a new white point system for good drivers, Al Bayan Arabic newspaper reported last week. The system is likely to be implemented by the end of the year.
This follows an instruction from Lt-General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police, Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin, Director of General Department of Traffic, announced at a press conference.
The white points earned will be added to the records of drivers each year if they do not commit any traffic law violations. These points will be transferred to the next year to strike off the black points, if any, recorded against him.
The system is likely to be implemented by the end of the year.
He said the police have created this mechanism to reward good drivers and encourage the others to comply with the traffic law.
Maj-Gen Al Zafin highlighted the coordination among the traffic departments across the country and an evaluation of the traffic situation during the first quarter of this year showed that the number of accidents has dropped.
He said that the idea of introducing white points was mooted by Lt-Gen Dhahi Khalfan who always comes up with new ideas to serve the Dubai Police strategy and enhance the police work.
At present, the General Department of Traffic is preparing a mechanism for the implementation and the decision will be announced with all details by the end of the current year.
The traffic department honours model motorists who do not any commit traffic law violations every year, giving material gifts to encourage them, Maj-Gen Al Zafin said, and added the Dubai Police aim to reduce the fatalities in road accidents to zero by 2020.
Deaths in traffic accidents decreased by 54 per cent since 2007 when 332 people died to 152 in 2010.
Maj-Gen Al Zafin said the Traffic Department will also prepare a blacklist of reckless drivers and their vehicles. Vehicles of such drivers will be monitored and their law behaviour on road will be checked to ensure that they not drive aggressively. If they continue to drive recklessly, their names will be announced in public.
