The second independent MPS for Dubai Metro energized |

Zawya reported that another milestone on the Dubai Metro project was achieved as the second of the three Main Power Supply systems for the Dubai Metro located in Union Square was energized recently.
The MPS2 has a maximum capacity of 160 MVA with dual step down 132/33 kV transformers. The MPS2 is fully automated and equipped with advanced protection and monitoring systems in addition to fire fighting systems. The other MPS3 substation is located as well at Union square which is currently under final testing phase for powering the Green Line network.
Mr Adnan Al Hammadi, rail construction director of the RTARTA said that" The electrically powered metro trial runs will continue in the next few months. MPS 1 & 2 together will provide entire power supply for the metro operation including rail stations for the Red Line serving the metro route of 52.1 kilometer from Rashidiya to Jebel Ali."
He added that "The design of Dubai Metro power network is very robust and reliable. In the unlikely event of total failure of any one MPS the metro operations will not be affected on the entire rail network. Dubai Metro utilizes the concept of braking power regeneration to help minimize power consumption from DEWA grid.”
Mr Adnan further said that "The power system is one of the major components in Metro operation. Special emphasis was therefore placed to ensure very reliable and failsafe system for Dubai Metro continuously co coordinated with DEWA to ensure the implementation of power network in complete compliance with DEWA and international standards.”
The Metro Power system network will be fully monitored and controlled from dedicated Operations Control Centre for all normal and emergency situations to ensure safe and reliable metro operations.
