Dubai: Dubai Metro's first day of public services suffered a few technical glitches, "teething problems" as some described it.
A number of technical glitches on the Dubai Metro yesterday affected hundreds of commuters using the service for the first time, causing delays in almost all stations.
The glitches started at 9.55am when one of the trains broke down at Nakheel Tower and Harbour station. Passengers expecting to board it were asked to change platforms, but had to wait until 11.55 am before the next train came.
Approximately 70 passengers sat on the seats and the platform, with some saying they could resort to taxis since their cars were parked at other stations. "There was one train with a mechanical fault, luckily the fault was discovered at the station, so all the people could disembark and take another train," said a technician at Serco.
"There was a problem with the pneumatic coupler, the pneumatic hose was disconnected, the pressure was reduced and so the emergency brakes were applied and the train would not move, that caused the delay. We were able to access the third rail, isolate the bogie and move the train to the depot."
Many commuters also complained of the sliding doors shutting without warning.
Around midday, the doors of one train failed to open at the Terminal 3 station at Dubai Airport. That caused a 10 minute delay.
At approximately at 2pm, a train heading towards Jebel Ali stopped abruptly on the track, causing traffic on Shaikh Zayed Road below to slow down as motorists paused to look.
