Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Annika Sorenstam posted a three-under 69 on Sunday to cruise to victory in the inaugural Dubai Ladies Masters. She finished at 18-under-par 270 and won by six.
Helen Alfredsson, next year's European Solheim Cup captain, came in second place after a five-under 67 on Sunday. She completed the tournament at 12- under-par 276 and was astonished by the win of Sorenstam, who will most assuredly be on Alfredsson's team next year.
"She is just such a fantastic player, she has continued to play so incredibly well in the last few years and just continues to produce and produce," said Alfredsson.
Karrie Webb, who was in second place overnight, albeit seven behind, only carded a two-under 70 in the final round, but it was enough for third place. She played 72 holes in 10-under-par 278.
Sorenstam, one of the top closers on the LPGA Tour, admitted most of her nerves were due to the amount of royalty presenting her with the trophy on Sunday.
"It was great to have the Royal Highnesses here," said Sorenstam. "I was actually a bit more nervous on the speech than I had been on over the four- footers.
"It's always nice to start a round with a seven-shot lead. I was just solid today and I didn't really make a lot of mistakes. I was just enjoying myself and trying to avoid a big number."
The youngest member of the Ladies European Tour, 17-year-old Amy Yang, shot a three-under 69 and tied for fourth place with Veronica Zorzi, who posted a two-under 70. The pair was knotted at eight-under-par 280. |
