Smart traffic system to reduce accidents
  10/18/2006 8:58:02 AM

DUBAI — Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has said that the ‘Smart Traffic System’ which will be operational by next month, is among the biggest projects implemented by RTA costing Dh75 million.

The system aims at reducing the rate of traffic accidents by more than 15 per cent as well as the number of driving hours in the Emirate with an average of 1.5 million hours annually which will help reduce the rate of traffic jams and pollution.

This was discussed during a meeting that Al Tayer held with Dr Jamal Mohammed Al-Marri, Acting Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police in order to implement directives of Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Executive Council, in Dubai regarding stricter control measures, monitoring of law breakers and penalties for offenders. Giving details about the ‘Smart Traffic System’, Al Tayer said that the project includes signs with highest specifications and modern techniques used for the first time in the world. "It covers several roads including Shaikh Zayed, Al Khaleej, Emirates Road, Shaikh Rashid, Abu Bakr Al Siddique, Al Ittihad, The Port, Baniyas, Al Maktoum and Al Garhoud Bridges, and Al Shindagha tunnel".

He pointed out that the first stage would include installation of sophisticated devices that allocate calculation of the volume of traffic congestion on the main and highway roads and the traffic flow - such as traffic accidents and vehicle breakdowns in addition to road congestion resulting from the high traffic density.

"The system also provides timing of trips on the routes after the analysis of data received from the site tools which includes installation of 30 surveillance cameras and 500 sensors with radars and 50 PTZ cameras. These devices look for vehicle breakdowns, accidents and traffic congestion. The cameras will detect breakdowns and accidents while the sensors will detect changes in the traffic flow," he added.

Al Tayer also said the system will give priority to emergency vehicles like ambulances, rescue and fire trucks on all intersections automatically because of detectors that will be be operated only during an emergency.
He said the project includes establishment of a control centre with global specifications. "Huge screens will support operators and engineers in the control room. The RTA will help the Dubai Police maintain a database of traffic statistics as well as archive and register pictures by controlled cameras," he added.
