  02/03/2009 10:24:13 AM

Qatar will participate, for the first time, in Art Dubai 2009, one of the world’s leading international art fairs.

Art Dubai will take place at the Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai, from March 19 to 21, in conjunction with Contemparabia, which will be from March 15 to 22 in Doha, Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.

Qatari artist Rula Haj Ismail’s work The Tabouli Performer in its project space, Art Park will be featured during the event. Art Dubai will also feature the Doha-based art gallery, The Third Line.

A record number of regional and international art lovers are expected to visit the Gulf during this period. An exceptional programme of events, exhibitions, talks, tours and performances taking place in Doha, Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi will give visitors an opportunity to experience the outstanding quality and vibrancy of the region’s art scene.

“This year, the third edition of Art Dubai will bring more than 60 of the world’s leading contemporary galleries from more than 30 countries and sees a fifty-percent increase in the number of Middle Eastern galleries participating. The strength in the quality of applications from Middle Eastern galleries at Art Dubai 2009 has not happened by chance. The kind of growth that we have recently witnessed is proof of the continued importance of the contemporary art market in the region which has been greatly encouraged by flagship institutions such as the Museum of Islamic Art,” said John Martin, fair director and co-founder.

This year, Art Dubai will launch the Abraaj Capital Art Prize, the world’s most valuable contemporary art prize and the critically acclaimed Global Art Forum, as well as a comprehensive programme of projects, films, performance, events and tours.

“Art Dubai is delighted to be able to bring the Global Art Forum to the magnificent Museum of Islamic Art, for one day, to present the discussion Creating Spaces, Creating Audiences,” said Martin.

Accompanying Art Dubai 2009, sponsor Van Cleef & Arpels will host its own patrimony exhibition titled “The Art of Magical Jewels”. Van Cleef & Arpels’ retrospective exhibition will be the first of its kind in the region, leading Art Dubai visitors on a time-travelling journey of the House’s enticing craftsmanship and history. The museum-quality exhibition will be set up for the duration of Art Dubai.

The Qatar Museums Authority, Sharjah Biennial, Abu Dhabi Authority for Art and Culture and Art Dubai will collaborate in Contemparabia; a tour designed to draw international attention to the world-class cultural projects currently under way in the Middle East and set to attract record numbers of critics, artists, curators, and collectors from around the world.
