Police launch safety campaigns as schools reopen

Dubai: Several police stations in Dubai are taking precautionary measures and preparations for the beginning of the academic year to ensure the safety of school pupils.

Police stations in Al Rashidiya and Bur Dubai are implementing a programme to create awareness among pupils, parents, teachers, and school drivers.

Children are being taught how to safely walk to and from the bus; parents receive guidance on driving safely in a school area and properly parking their vehicles when dropping off or picking up their children so as to avoid traffic jams.

In this context, Al Rashidiya Police Station is introducing a traffic education programme in all the schools that fall within its jurisdiction. There are estimated to be around 27 public and private schools, Major Mubarak Al Kitbi, Acting Director of Al Rashidiya Police Station, said.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Ali Ganem, director of Bur Dubai Police Station, the role of the police will not only be restricted to external duties, but "we will get involved with schools during their festivals and activities to raise awareness and to change children's mindset about the police force.

"Children are raised to believe that the police are an authority to fear which we don't want that. We want children to know that we are their guardians."

Lt. Col. Ganem said the police will deal with reports about robberies, assault, and harassment in schools when required.

On his part, Major Al Kitbi pointed out during a press conference that the awareness programme is aimed primarily to educate students and parents on the right behaviour to be adopted when getting to and leaving school.

He pointed out that the programme is aimed at all age groups from kindergarten through high school, which will be conducted by lectures, seminars, and campaigns.

He added that the station will also be handing out booklets to parents and drivers and schools to raise awareness and maintain the safety of students.
