The attendance percentage in private schools that reopened for the new term continued to be low on the second day even as no cases of suspected H1N1 virus were reported.
A majority of the absentees are from kindergarten and lower primary as parents considered it not safe to send younger children to school.
Principals of Asian schools that opened on Sunday said the attendance percentage continued to be low on the second day of the term with only a slight increase in the student turnout. On Sunday when schools reopened after the summer break, attendance in lower primary classes was as low as 40 per cent in majority of the schools.
"So far there are no suspected cases reported. I think parents are taking extra care in not sending their children to school if they are not well because it will spread panic," said Asok Kumar, CEO of Indian High School Dubai.
The school postponed the reopening for a day as a precaution against the spreading of swine flu. Kumar said the kindergarten students will start classes only today.
Parents said they are planning to keep children at home for at least a week despite precautions taken by schools.
"My daughter's immunity is very low. And when I contacted her school, they said they do not mind if she does not attend school for a few days," said Sanjay Chand, a parent.
