More than half a million use Dubai water bus in 2009 |

More than half a million passengers travelled on Dubai’s water buses last year, the Marine Transport Authority said in a statement on Thursday.
The agency, part of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), revealed 532,062 passengers made 128,092 journeys in 2009.
The busiest month was February when 50,060 passengers ferried in 9,968 journeys, the statement said.
This was followed by January which saw 48,764 passengers lifted in 11,036 journeys, then November when 47,813 passengers made 9,410 journeys, while in May 46,686 passengers were transported in 11,082 journeys.
“The water bus lays the foundation for a water-borne transportation [network],” said Hussain Ali Al Saffar, director of the Operation and Maintenance Department.
“[It] provides passengers with access to the giant projects forming the waterfront of Dubai city such as the Palm and The World Islands.”
Dubai’s water bus operates four lines; from Sabkha Station to Bur Dubai Station, from Seef Station to Sabkha Station via Bani Yas Station, from Bani Yas Station to Dubai Old Souk Station, and the Tourist Line linking Shindagha Station, Bur Dubai Station, Deira Old Souk Station, Seef Station and Creek Park Station.
“It contributes to developing safe marine transportation systems integrated with other transport modes such as rail, taxi and buses in order to enhance the role of public transport and contribute to easing traffic congestion in the emirate of Dubai and neighbouring emirates,” Al Saffar added.
