Dubai: The Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry of Economy arranged a visit to the Fruits and Vegetables market in Dubai to check the outlets' compliance with preset prices and sales terms agreed upon by the ministry and outlets representatives in previous meetings.
Dr. Hashim Al Nuaimi, Director of the Consumer Protection Department at the MoE, led the visit and toured shops in the market accompanied by officials from the Department of Economic Development and Dubai Municipality. During the visit, the ministry issued fines against errant traders for non-compliance with the preset prices. Al Nuaimi and accompanying officials also took action against outlets that did not display price tags on the products.
Al Nuaimi said that the ministry is committed to supervising the markets throughout Ramadan and will take necessary action to ensure that outlets adhere to the consumer protection Federal law. He said warnings will be issued to violating traders initially followed by a fine of AED1,000 if they do not comply. If they persist on violations, the outlet will be closed down.
He added:" Our specialized teams will intensify their visits to cover most of the key sales outlets in Dubai. We will not show any leniency towards price manipulators or monopoly traders. We will also extend our visits to other markets in different Emirates, thus implement the ministry's plan to supervise markets in the holy month of Ramadan. We are open to suggestions as we want to stop price chaos and monopoly practices."
