Local entrepreneurs have been urged to use the two-week International Consumer Festival that began on Wednesday in Dar es Salaam to learn the basics of international trade.
The call was made by the minister for Trade, Industry and Marketing, Dr Mary Nagu, in her speech to inaugurate the festival at the Mwalimu Nyerere trade fair grounds in Dar es Salaam.
The two-week show has attracted exhibitors from more than 11 countries, including Tanzania. She said the event complemented the Government's efforts to promote trade in the country.
"This is part of the Government's efforts to promote the trade sector in our country, and presents a good opportunity to local traders to come and acquire business strategies and make contacts with the visitors," Dr Nagu noted in the speech read on her behalf by the ministry's permanent secretary, Ms Joyce Mapunjo.
The festival has been organised by Syrian businessman Ali Nizam. It entails providing consumers with a variety of merchandise and other items such as clothes, foodstuffs, jeweller, and domestic utensils.
Mr Nizam, who is the managing director of Nizam Exhibitions Company, said the festival was the first step in building a mega-event in East Africa, similar to the famous Dubai Shopping Festival. He said the latter had been successful and productive in terms of stimulating big commercial transactions, investments and tourism.
Entrances for the Dar es Salaam event are Sh500 and Sh1,000 for children and adults, respectively.
Other participating countries include Syria, Indonesia, China, India and Sudan.
