  Launching the third session of the Emirates Energy Award

  * UAE ranked fifth of the world's energy consumption Dubai Quality Group has announced today the launch of its third session of the "Emirates Energy Award" under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. The announcement stated in a press conference held at Raffles Hotel.

H.E Saeed Al Tayer, board of directors deputy member, executive director of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority and Chairman of the Emirates Energy Award, said: " The importance of this award lies in the daily indications of energy consumption rate in all forms which increased continuously and reflects negatively on our environment, economy and the implementation of development plans and programs in the country. So, this award comes within our tireless schematic and awareness efforts in order to rationalize energy consumption, not only to preserve what has been achieved, but also for the launch of the achievements of new development. "

Al Tayer asserted that the award has achieved a great success at its second session as it contributed to motivate individuals and companies from both public and private sectors to enhance their participation in national efforts to preserve energy. "We expect that this year award will attract more participants and include new effective and innovative strategies in the management and rational use of energy" he added.

He hoped that the award would urge more individuals and organizations to adopt practices and systems that contribute in the rational use of energy, especially that the UAE is considered one of the top of the world in terms of rate of consumption, where the international reports indicate that UAE is ranked fifth in the world where per capita consumption of oil and electricity products.

Dr. Wafi Dawood, Chairman of Dubai Quality Group, said "Emirates Energy Award is one of the most important initiatives undertaken by the Group and aims to achieve sustainable development and raise awareness among community members about the optimal use of energy".

He pointed out that the award is one of the steps being pursued by the group to highlight the requirements of quality and service in various organizations through organizing many training programs and courses, promoting various professional and managerial expertise, and raising awareness of the importance of optimal use of energy in order to achieve sustainable development in the country and the region. The award also allows nominees to share information, experiences and best practices in order to support government efforts to promote sustainable development through the efficient use of energy.

He stressed on the importance of understanding the multiple benefits provided by the standards of energy preservation. These practices entail benefit for both companies and society, especially as the country ranked first in the rate of energy consumption among the Gulf countries by up to 10%, while this percentage is 7% in Saudi Arabia, ranging between 4% and 6% in the rest of the Gulf countries according to recent World Energy Council report.

It should be noted that this award is sponsored by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) the main sponsor, Dubai Aluminum (DUBAL) the golden sponsor, and Dubai Media Incorporated (DMI) the media sponsor.

Abdullah Jasem bin Kalban, Chairman and CEO of Dubal commented: “Being an environmentally aware company, DUBAL has consciously endeavored to reduce energy consumption levels since the company’s inception in 1979; and to minimize the environmental impact of our power generation facilities. Through increasing efficiencies, the total amount of electricity we use per ton of aluminum has decreased over the years. Over the past 19 years or so, we have achieved a 7.5 per cent reduction in the energy used for the electrolysis of aluminum. By installing state-of-the-art equipment, we have reduced the concentration of gaseous emissions from the power plant to less than 20 parts per million, we are very proud to be participating in the Emirates Energy Awards for the third year in a row.”

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is considered a leading governmental organization in the establishment of organizational standards of excellence, where the authority is working to provide all its services electronically which formed a qualitative shift in the governmental services. DEWA succeeded in making quite remarkable achievements locally and internationally including winning the Qualification Award to the Hall of Fame in the application of Balanced Scorecard in Strategic Planning (2008) to be the first in the Middle East and North Africa to win this prestigious award, the Sword of Honor Award in the field of industrial safety and occupational safety of the British Safety Council, the Golden Award for Distinguished Governmental Department of the Dubai Government Excellence Award, the Emirates Energy Award, and the Gulf Cooperation Council Award for the best environmental business practices.

DUBAL is the world’s largest modern aluminum smelter with a captive power station. It is also one of the largest non-oil contributors to the economy of Dubai. Built on a 480-hectare site in Jebel Ali, Dubai, UAE, DUBAL’s major facilities comprise an 960,000 ton-per-annum primary aluminum smelter, a 2,350 megawatt power station (at 30°C), a large carbon plant, three cast houses, a 30-million-gallon-per-day water desalination plant, laboratories, port and storage facilities. Employment is provided to more than 4,100 people, of whom approximately 24 per cent are UAE Nationals.

The company has the capacity to produce more than one million tons of high quality finished aluminum products a year, in three main forms: foundry alloy for automotive applications; extrusion billet for construction, industrial and transportation purposes; and high purity aluminum for the electronics and aerospace industries.

DUBAL serves more than 290 customers in 48 countries predominantly in the Far East, Europe, the ASEAN region, the Middle East and Mediterranean region, and North America. The company holds ISO 9001, ISO/TS 16949, ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certification; and has twice won the Dubai Quality Award in the Production and Manufacturing sector (1996 and 2000).
