Kip Deville warms up for Dubai Duty Free prep

Dubai Duty Free (Gr.1) candidate Kip Deville held the spotlight at Gulfstream Park on Wednesday, working over the turf course between the track’s second and third races as he prepares for his 2009 racing debut.

Ridden by jockey Cornelio Velasquez, Kip Deville skimmed through six furlongs on the firm course in 1:16.80 after recording early fractions of :26.80 and :51.60.

"He looked tremendous,” trainer Rick Dutrow, who sent out two winners on last year’s Dubai World Cup (Gr.1) program, told Daily Racing Form.

Dutrow has chosen the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap (Gr.1) at 1 1/8 miles on February 1 for Kip Deville’s first start since the horse finished unplaced in the Hong Kong Mile (Gr.1) on December 14. Before traveling to Hong Kong, the now six-year-old gray son of Kipling had beaten all but Goldikova in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (Gr.1), a race he won in 2007.

The Gulfstream stakes will be a test for Kip Deville, a talented miler, to see how he performs in a slightly longer race while in Grade 1 company.

“We want to see if he can handle a mile and one-eighth," Dutrow said. "If he puts on a real show, there's a good chance we'll take him to Dubai.”

Kip Deville is owned by IEAH Stable and partners, which campaigned last year’s Dubai Golden Shaheen (Gr.1) winner Benny the Bull. A three-time Grade 1 winner, Kip Deville has captured 11 of 26 career starts and has earned US$3,139,614.
