It's the wheel deal for Matt in Dubai |

A SIX month stint in Dubai working for the government to establish a driving licence testing system is a ‘professional calling of a lifetime’, says Matt Irvine.
Mr Irvine, a former road safety officer and driving instructor with over 15 years experience accepted the contract after being approached by international body VicRoads to work for Dubai’s roads and transport authority.
Mr Irvine was a well known figure on the Lithgow Local Government scene for many years as Road Safety Officer with Lithgow Council.
He introduced innovative safety awareness courses for young drivers in conjunction with the Lithgow PCYC and Rescue Squad before being obliged to resign to contest the elections for the neighboring Bathurst Regional Council.
While his history has largely been as a driving instructor and more recently road safety officer, Mr Irvine — a Yetholme resident — said policy development was a real passion of his.
“Back in the late 1990’s I was involved in governmental policy development and was part of the team that introduced log books for learner drivers.
“That’s had a really positive impact, and it makes me really happy to know I’ve been part of something that has helped lower the road toll over the years,” he said.
Mr Irvine said he jumped at the opportunity after it was offered.
“The offer came just after I missed out on council [he stood in the 2007 Local Government Election] so the timing was perfect.
“If it had been offered to me earlier I would have said no because I was committed [to running for council],” he explained.
“I feel very flattered to have been approached; I feel the work I’ve been doing for 15 years has been noticed, and it’s very rewarding to be doing it on a national stage,” he said.
Mr Irvine said the original contract is for six months, but he isn’t turning a blind eye to other opportunities that might arise while he is overseas.
