  4/30/2008 10:36:00 AM

India Club, Dubai will play host to yet another round of top flight open badminton from May 27.

The main title rounds are slotted for June 13.

The leading UAE and Gulf expat players from Denmark, Britain, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand, China, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India will take part.

The new 21-point international format will make its debut in the UAE at this championships which again will have the relatively new categories for girls under-10 and 12 and, boys under-10 and 12.

The 18-category tournament will also see action in the senior veterans men’s doubles which is being re-introduced based on the requests from the senior club players in the UAE.

Over 300 players in various age groups will take part in the event at the four court parquet facility of the club located near Karama and adjacent to the Al Nasr stadium and The Indian High School complexes.

Last year, three of India’s top 15 singles and doubles players and, Iranian Thomas Cuppers, took part apart from a former player of the Danish professional league.

The main attraction this time will be the presence of Indian internationals Sanave Thomas and Rupesh Kumar, the number ones in men’s doubles, Diju Valiya Veetil and Jaseel P. Ismail, the second rated men’s doubles pair and, Saurav Verma, the top rated junior player.

Verma is a product of former All-England champion Pulela Gopichand’s academy in India.

Veteran Jaseel P. Ismail. is perhaps one of India’s longest lasting Thomas Cupper having been in doubles rankings for over a decade.

Apart from the lead sponsors — Western Union Money Transfer — associate sponsor Air India are providing the return tickets for the players besides other six tickets for the winners in various categories.

The other associate sponsors of the event are, ABN Amro NRI Credit Card, Pepsi and Joyalukkas Jewellers,

The media partners include 106.2 Hum FM and Pehla Premium Asian Entertainment and Gulf Today.

The co-sponsors are Al Rawabi, Eppco Caltex, Safilo Group, Rolla Residence Hotel Apartments and Car Fare Rent A Car.

Matches commence at 7pm and shuttlecocks will be provided. As many as 15 matches will be played on Thursday evenings and Friday mornings.

This time like last year, there will be a restriction on the number of events that each player can take part in the tournament.

This is basically to give a chance to more players to make it to the top rather than a select few clinching the podium positions. Each player can participate in a maximum of three events only.

Entry forms are available at the India Club reception and also on the India Club website (www.Indiaclubdubai.com). The last date for receiving entries will be Thursday, May 15.

More details can be had from the India Club reception on 04-3371112.

The Press event announcing the event was held at the club premises yesterday.
