Hospitals in Abu Dhabi have been charging patients up to 1,000 dirhams ($273) for swine flu tests that the World Health Organization (WHO) says are often unnecessary, UAE daily the National reported on Tuesday.
Patients fearful of the apparent side effects of Tamiflu have been demanding the tests in order to avoid taking the drug, the newspaper said.
Some private hospitals in the UAE capital have been asking for anything between 250 and 1,000 dirhams for the test, and are charging up to 180 dirhams for Tamiflu, the paper said.
Charging for the tests is banned in neighbouring Dubai, the paper added.
The WHO has regularly played down the dangers of swine flu, saying that most healthy people infected with the A(H1N1) virus will make a full recovery.
But the elderly, very young, pregnant women and people with serious pre-existing medical conditions should seek immediate treatment if they develop flu-like symptoms, the WHO says.
