Seeded Grandmasters were challenged in the third day of the Dubai Open Chess Championship.
In a day of upsets many seeded grandmasters were held to a draws and Fidemaster Alavi Sayed Javad of Iran pulled off an upset win over his teammate Grandmaster Ghaem Maghami Ehsan.
In a keenly contested match in the third round of the Dubai junior chess championship, Alavi Sayed, Grandmasters Gelashvili Tamaz and Pantsulaia Levan of Georgia, are at the top of the table with 3 points in as many rounds.
Alavi Sayed won in 28 moves from a Sicilian defence where players castled on opposite wings.
Alavi, a promising talent from Iran took the lead from the initial stages and launched a pawn storm in king side.
Maghami was forced to sacrifice a piece and the youngster played brilliantly to convert the advantage.
Gelashvili defeated Grandmaster R.B. Ramesh of India in 53 moves from a Kings Indian Attack.
In a complex match, Gelashvilli maintained a slight edge and in time trouble converted his positional plus to a victorious position.
IM Safarli Eltaj of Azerbaijan had a quick draw with his teammate Grandmaster Guseinov Gadir in just 9 moves.
Among the UAE players, Fidemasters Othman Moussa and Abdul Majeed Mohamed are on top with 2 points while Grandmaster Taleb Moussa and FM Jasim A.R. Saleh are half a point behind.
Othman won his game against FM Ayyad Maher of Bahrain while Abdul Majeed defeated FM Saeed Ishaq. |
