A Dubai court condemned a Pakistani to death for murdering a Nepalese night watchman in what could lead to the emirate’s first execution in eight years, local newspapers reported yesterday.
Abdul Sabur K, 24, was found guilty of attacking and torturing Bahadur Badan, a 34-year-old guard at a car showroom in March in order to find out where the company safe was, English-language daily The National reported.
The 7Days newspaper said that after torturing the man with a knife and a hammer he stabbed him 11 times.
“The defendant’s determination was clear to take the life of the victim,” presiding judge Saeed bin Sarm was quoted as saying by The National.
Sarm told the newspaper the brutality of the murder was behind the court decision on Tuesday to condemn the Pakistani to death rather than sentence him to life in prison.
The defendant, who was not in court, has 30 days to appeal. If confirmed, the death sentence will be carried out by firing squad.
It is the first death penalty issued in Dubai since 2005, although that sentence was commuted to a prison term on appeal.
The emirate’s last execution, in 2001, involved a Pakistani who was convicted of abducting and raping a girl.
Although the UAE has the death penalty, including for drug trafficking, executions are very rare in the conservative state.
