  1/9/2007 8:55:21 AM

Dubai Marathon organisers are confident that a new mark will be established on Friday.

Speaking to Gulf News after attending the function, which donated money for charity organisations, Ahmad Al Kamali, the chief organiser of the Dubai Marathon, said: "We are confident that the record mark for men and also for women will be erased. The weather right now is excellent and if it would remain the same, we can see many records crumble."

Dubai Holding has announced a prize of Dh1 million for the athlete who can break the world marathon record of 2 hours 4 minutes and 55 seconds.

The function was attended by the UAE's gold medal winning Olympian, shooter Shaikh Ahmad Bin Hasher Al Maktoum. He gave away the cheques to representatives of various organisations and honoured sponsors who had supported the marathon over the years.

"This marathon has placed Dubai in the international map. Today, this event is watched by millions all over the world," said Shaikh Ahmad.

The Dubai marathon organisers donated Dh42,195 to three in charity organisations. "We decided on this amount as 42.195m is the total distance of our marathon," said Kamali.

Dubai Autism Centre, Al Noor Centre and Dubai Special Needs officials were given cheques of Dh 42,195 each. The Dubai Marathon officials also donated money to promote athletics in the UAE.

The UAE Schools Federation, Al Ahli Kids Athletic Centre and Dubai Senses Centre were given Dh30,000 each.

"Dubai Marathon is no longer just a sporting event. It is a service to the society. We are utilising the event to help the community, the special needs children and also promote athletics in the UAE.

"Next year we will donate more money. We are thankful to our sponsors Dugas, Al Abbas group, S. S. Lootah, Khalil Al Sai Jewellery and Al Habtoor as well as our main sponsors Standard Chartered Bank and Dubai Holdings," Kamali said.

Shaikh Ahmad will flag off the Dubai Marathon at 7am on Friday.
