Jeev Milkha Singh shot into a career-high 37th rank in the world from a poor 376th in just one season and now the ace golfer is returning to Dubai to provide a taste of 'Incredible India' on the greens when he competes in the Dubai Desert Classic which takes place at the Emirates Golf Club from February 1-4.
The son of legendary athlete Milkha Singh added a golden chapter in Indian golf when he broke into the top 100 in October last year and went on to become the first Indian to enter the top 50 of the official world golf rankings last month.
What preceded this remarkable turnaround of fortunes was a total different story altogether. A story of struggle as a "disappointed" Jeev had to go without a title for six years.
"It was an uphill battle for me, but I am fortunate enough to be back in the winning circle," said Jeev after winning four titles in the just-ended season, including the Volvo Masters in Spain and back-to-back wins in Japan, on his way to a first Asian Tour order of merit title.
His lofty position has guaranteed Jeev an invitation to this year's US Masters, and the three other majors.
"It's been a dream year for me," said Jeev who will be joined by fellow countrymen Jyoti Randhawa, Shiv Kapur and Emaar-MGF PGTI Championship winner Harmeet Kahlon in the stellar line-up, led by world No 1 Tiger Woods.
"I think Asians have a lot of talent and that they can play with the best in the world. Playing against some of the top golfers will always be tough, but I have seen Woods playing and have learnt a lot from him, said the Indian sensation.
"I am looking forward to playing in the Dubai Desert Classic, a tournament which I believe is one of the best-organised events in the world. I know there are a lot of Indians out there in the UAE, who will be keenly watching our progress and all I can say is that we will try and give our best," he said.
'golf in DUBAI', the promoters and organisers of the Dubai Desert Classic, was equally pleased to welcome back the ace Indian golfers, Jeev, in particular.
"First, I would like to congratulate Jeev for his stunning success and, I hope, we all will see some flashes of his brilliance at the Majlis course," said Mohammad Juma Bu Amim, vice-chairman of 'giD'. |
