  Dubai Sept 29: The Dancing Bird Jewelry Designer Contest 2009 is back with a bang - bigger and better. While the rising competition is reducing the individual achievement and growth possibilities, Dancing Bird Designer Contest, in its fourth year, has continually been successful in providing the masses with an opportunity to enter the jewelry designing field. Aabharan Jewellery, in association with Dubai Gold and Jewellery group and IGI, International Gemological Institute, invites fresh talents to participate in Dancing Bird Designer 2009, a Jewellery designing contest, offering a unique opportunity to realize your dreams as a Jewellery designer. It is a contest which invites the creative talents from non Jewellery background to participate and showcase their innovative skills, and set a lucrative path for oneself as a Jewellery designer.

The event started in April?09, starting with the Call for entries, ending with the grand finale on 3rd Oct?2009. Dancing Bird ?Celebrating Life DB is a jewelry gift brand, or in other words an ?Expression of Emotion?. It personifies a gift brand you present to someone you cherish. The brand relates the product range to various celebrating occasions in life be it Birthday, Engagement, Wedding, new born, graduations, etc. Every piece in Dancing Bird is designed to service these moments, making them memorable pieces of art.

Objective of Dancing bird Designer Contest 2009 are to Identify and innovate a range of contemporary designs that appeal to today?s woman; Identify, recognize and motivate design talent in the amateur and student fraternity; and Highlight design and manufacturing excellence, train the budding design talent the importance of translating their sketches into an artistic piece.

Design Theme for Dancing Bird Contest 2009:

Flowers is the selected theme and inspiration for Dancing Bird Designer Contest 2009. The designs had to developed to cater to two celebrations of life: Valentines Day and Daily wear.

The contest was open to all residents of UAE and from all disciplines, except those currently working or connected to Jewellery industry. The contest was announced in the leading media and at all Aabharan and UAE Exchange outlets. The response to the contest was overwhelming, with participation from all disciplines and professions. This further proves the untapped creative talent in UAE. The designs were judged on the basis of adaptability to theme, originality and manufacturing feasibility. The entries received were shortlisted to 12 designs on the basis of the above criteria. These selected candidates were given media publicity, invited for a First Session , which involved a seminar on Jewellery Designing by Ms.Rashna Doctor, Manager Education and Training, International Gemological Institute.

The First Session of the Dancing Bird Contest took place on May?09 at Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group, Dubai.

The session started with an introduction of the Dancing Bird brand , the product portfolio and the Designer Contest details. This was followed by an informative Training Seminar on Jewellery Designing by Ms.Rashna Doctor, Manager Training and Education, International Gemological Institute. The training programme was intensive and upgraded the participants knowledge on gemology, the 4C?s of diamonds, the diamond grading pattern in the industry and the different types of color stones used in jewellery.

Ms.Rashna also made the session interactive by explaining the inspirations used in jewellery designing, the methods used in putting the concepts on paper, along with a detailed explanation on different kinds of settings and texturing used in designing. The prospective designers were also given an understanding of making their designs more feasible in terms of cost effectiveness, saleability and manufacturing friendly. The designers were asked to provide more details such as texturing, usage of precious and semi precious stones which would add uniqueness to their designs presented. This would help in knowing how much the designers have absorbed from the First Session. The participants enthusiasm in understanding and learning the jewellery details was immense, moreover, Ms.Prabhavati.V , Dancing Bird Designer 2008, also expressed her experience in participating in the DB contet which broadened her vision on jewellery designing as a career.The 12 participants were judged by public opinion and the judgment committee, and the results announcing the 6 shortlisted candidates took place in the leading media.

The six designers were exposed to one to one interaction with the manufacturer and Ms.Rashna Doctor from IGI, which increased their awareness about making their designs more feasible for manufacturing. The three finalists were given an intensive training in Jewellery manufacturing, where they would actually see their designs molded into artistic pieces of jewellery.

The 6 designs were narrowed down to 3 finalists, on 28th May 2009.

The three finalists are:
A) Ms.Naznin Akhtar
b) Ms.Ishita Saha
c) Ms.Farheen Fatima


1The Best Designer and the runners up would be rated at the Grand Finale on 3rd Oct 2009 at Zabeel ball Room,Radisson Blu Hotel, along with a Fashion Show for showcasing the most contemporary designs developed during this contest. The Prizes announced for this contest are:

First Winner will get Dancing Bird Designer Trophy along with Dancing Bird Designer 2008 set worth AED5000 and a Polished Diamond Grading Programme sponsored by International Gemological Institute.

Second winner will get Dancing Bird Designer 2008 Showstopper set worth AED 4000 along with IGI sponsoring a one day seminar on introduction to Polished Diamonds.

Third Winner will get Dancing Bird Designer 2007 Showstopper Set worth AED3000 along with IGI sponsoring a one day seminar on introduction to Polished Diamonds.

The shortlisted 12 participants would be awarded a Participation Certificate with Gift Vouchers from Aabharan Jewellery.
