The Dubai Cargo Village may abandon plans to build two new terminals in view of the upcoming international airport and logistics zone in Jebel Ali.
Under a 20-year expansion proposal in 2000 the Cargo Village intended to develop three terminals to cope with rising volumes at Dubai International Airport, but the plan has been overtaken by the ambitious Dubai World Central project.
The new airport in Jebel Ali will be 10 times the size of the existing Dubai airport and Dubai Cargo Village combined.
The $8.1-billion airport will have a capacity to handle 120 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo annually.
Cargo Village director Ali Al Jallaf told Gulf News that first phase work on the first Dh1-billion mega terminal will be completed by next January.
"We are not sure about the other two terminals because of Jebel Ali. We will take a final decision after two years because until then we do not need the two terminals," Al Jallaf said.
The terminal under construction will increase the Cargo Village's handling capacity by 1.2 million tonnes per year. To be fully ready by mid-2007, it will be used by Emirates SkyCargo and offer office space to logistics companies and cargo carriers.
At present the Cargo Village is handing almost double its capacity of about 700,000 tonnes.
Al Jallaf said cargo volumes at the facility this year will increase to 1.4 million tonnes compared with 1.2 million last year. By 2010, this capacity is expected to reach two million tonnes.
The Dubai Cargo Village will not become irrelevant after the Jebel Ali airport and cargo facilities are ready, Al Jallaf said.
"It will be there as long as the airport exists. More than 60 per cent of cargo comes from commercial flights and passenger flights are increasing," he said.
Many airlines, including Emirates, use excess cargo capacity on their scheduled flights to carry commercial cargo that is handled at the Cargo Village.
The Jebel Ali airport will be linked to Dubai International Airport via an express rail system and will be serviced by Dubai Metro. |
