'Dubai Airshow clearly demonstrates UAE's resilience'
  11.16.2009

The Dubai Airshow 2009, the 11th and largest in the biennial series, was officially opened yesterday by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

In a message to participants, the UAE Vice-President said the show clearly demonstrated the resilience of the UAE's events and exhibitions industry and the country's commitment to economic and technological advancement.

"The events and exhibitions industry remains as strong as ever in the UAE, which places great importance on this sector as evidenced by provision of the finest facilities available," said Sheikh Mohammed. "Within the context of this show we are extending our hands to others to foster friendly relations and cultural and scientific communication. We do so to continue our economic, cultural and technological advancement."

The opening prompted aviation and aerospace industry observers to comment on changing UAE industry dynamics – with the move into advanced composite aero structure manufacturing seen as a forerunner of things to come.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, along with General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, then toured the show, which features 890 companies from 47 countries and 13 country and regional pavilions. They stopped to board several of the 130 aircraft on the static park.

The extensive royal tour started with a visit to Dassault Aviation to inspect the Rafale Omnirole fighter jet. This was followed by an inspection of the Airbus A380 where the royal entourage was welcomed by Tom Enders, Airbus President and Chief Executive.

Pioneering bid

UAE carried out many giant economic and development projects that materialise the size of national ambitions that we all aspire for, said Lt General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.

"The importance of Dubai Airshow increases for us, since it is a pioneering platform that allows displaying the extent of big advancement achieved by UAE in this field."

Open to ideas

The Dubai Airshow could witness a revival in aerospace industry fortunes and Dubai stands ready to be at the forefront of the upturn, according to Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President, Dubai Department of Civil Aviation and Chairman of Dubai Airports.

"We are open to ideas. We are ready to work with companies in partnership," he said while welcoming exhibitors, delegates and visitors to the event.
