Don't sweep the downturn under the carpet

While some suppliers may resort to cutting back when confronted with the worldwide financial crisis, Carpets Inter has pushed forward, focusing particularly on the trend for green products.

Thailand-based manufacturer Carpets Inter ensures all is well underfoot for the region’s hotels in spite of the stormy business climate, as it continues to offer quality and value-for-money carpet designs from concept to installation.

The company employs more than 1700 staff at its 160,000m² modern factory featuring vertically-integrated production processes, including fibre and yarn extrusion, wool and synthetic yarn spinning, dying, twisting, heat setting, weaving, tufting and finishing.

“We believe attention to detail creates its own aesthetic. Carpets Inter has the expertise to help you turn your project vision into reality,” says senior export sales manager Teerachai Sritanaprasert.

“It’s our firm belief that when all aspects of creation happen underneath one roof you get a superior product,” adds Sritanaprasert, who has worked at Carpets Inter for more than 11 years after starting his career in the trading of non-ferrous items and canned goods.

Despite a significant 15% of Carpets Inter’s business coming from the Middle East, with key markets including the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, Sritanaprasert says he has noticed a slump in business coming from Dubai. However, “other main cities in the Gulf do not look that bad”, he adds.

The main causes of a drop in the market from Dubai include buyers “squeezing on price due to global recession”, according to Sritanaprasert, as well as some cancelled hotel projects. “We pay attention to possible cost increase from volume drop, which will affect our profit at the bottom line,” he explains.

Another challenge for Carpet Inter in this region has been the growing number of budget hotels meaning “comparatively less expensive products will be considered due to a limited budget,” says Sritanaprasert, who highlights a growing tendency for these hotels to opt for hard flooring rather than carpet.

In addition, a tight schedule and the increasing necessity for secured payments have made 2009 quite a tough year for Carpets Inter among many other suppliers.

Yet, despite reported hotel cost cutbacks across the board, Sritanaprasert has noticed more and more “people start talking seriously about green products”.

In response, Carpet Inter professes to be a local leader in the ‘Reuse, Recycle, Reduce’ campaign and to be one of the first companies operating in this region to obtain and comply with both quality and environmental ISO certifications.

Furthermore, Sritanaprasert claims buyers are still not willing to compromise quality. “Though we are manufacturers from the Far East, our aim is to be a supplier of choice that buyers can fully trust on quality, delivery and service,” concludes Sritanaprasert.
