Cops search for Kampani. JM: he’s in Dubai on work
  12/31/2008 4:07:56 AM

After breaking the ice in the long-pending Nagarjuna Finance Ltd (NFL) case by arresting two directors of the now defunct NBFC, the Hyderabad police have now stepped up their efforts to get their hands around former director of NFL and renowned investment banker Nimesh Kampani.

DNA Money broke the story on cops scrutinising Kampani’s role on December 22.
The deputy commissioner of police (DCP) of the Hyderabad’s Central Crime Station (CCS) Praveen Kumar told DNA Money that Kampani was absconding.

“We are currently searching for him and he is absconding,” Kumar said. Responding to the police charges, JM Financial, in a press release on Tuesday, said, “Kampani is currently in Dubai and is expected to return to India upon completion of his business meetings.”

JM said police personnel from Hyderabad accompanied by police personnel from Mumbai visited the office of JM Financial on December 29, 2008, for a meeting with him in connection with the Nagarjuna Finance matter.

“The senior police officer from Hyderabad also spoke to Kampani (in Dubai) on the telephone. Kampani informed him that he was in no way involved with the Nagarjuna Finance matter, having resigned as a non-executive director in 1999. He responded to all the questions put forth by the police officer. He assured the police officer that he was in meetings in Dubai and on completion of his business meetings would be returning to India. He also stated that he would fully cooperate with the ongoing investigations.”
