DUBAI - Bahrain will create 185,000 new jobs for its citizens in the next five years as it tackles unemployment among its educated workforce, local paper Gulf Daily News reported on Thursday.
As part of the new plan, 35,000 Bahrainis with high educational qualifications will take up jobs currently filled by trained and qualified expatriates, while 150,000 people with school education will be trained for entry-level jobs, the newspaper reported.
"We are focused on empowering Bahrainis by giving them the right opportunities to stand out as employees of choice, who can power the growth of the country," Abdulelah al-Qassimi, who heads the government initiative Tamkeen to help jobless Bahrainis, was quoted as saying.
Unemployment among Bahrainis is a hot political issue in the small Gulf nation and the government remains sensitive about it.
The country’s labour minister said in April this year the unemployment rate was 3.5 percent, but unofficially it is believed to be much higher.
