An aeroplane which left Seychelles on Sunday with over 100 Russian tourists on board but was reportedly detained in the UAE committed no offence in Seychelles or within this country’s airspace, Nation learned yesterday.
Reports in the international media said that the plane left Sharjah Airport and landed in Moscow’s Domodedovo on Sunday afternoon after being detained in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
“No reasons for the airplane's landing in Sharjah after flying from the Seychelles were given,” said one of the reports, which added that the plane was flying under the KrasAir flag.
“The most likely reason for the detention is that the plane was probably involved in an air traffic incident which could have posed risk to itself and other aircraft,” a Seychelles civil aviation official said yesterday, adding that it appears as if the plane flew at a different level from the one it had been assigned.
The news that an Il-62 with the KrasAir flag and Russian tourists on board heading from the Seychelles for Moscow was arrested appeared on Sunday morning. A KrasAir spokesperson explained that the liner was to refuel and take on board food in the Arab Emirates.
“However, when the airplane was flying above the Arab Emirates, it changed its height, and an alarm suggesting an approaching plane was triggered off. The crew informed all the services about the incident,” the report said.
The Arab Emirates reportedly detained the plane to find out if there had been an approaching airplane in fact or that was a failure of aircraft’s instruments. A representative of Dubai-based Russian consulate was sent to Sharjah, which is situated 30 kilometres away from Dubai, to do the checkup.
The arrested aeroplane belongs to Domodedovo Airlines and not to Krasnoyarsk Airlines, but flies under the KrasAir flag because both the air companies are a part of AirUnion, so both the airplanes can fly with each other's flags, one of the reports said.
