The American University in Dubai in collaboration with the Dubai Traffic Prosecution recently held a lecture titled "Together Towards a Culture of Legal Traffic", presented by Mr. Salah Mohamed Bu Faroosha - Chief Prosecutor, also attended by Mr. Yousuf Al Zarouni - Senior Prosecutor, Mr. Tariq Ibrahim Seif - Head of Mass Communication and Mr. Elias Bou Saab - Executive Vice President of the University, in addition to faculty and staff members and students. Bu Faroosha started his lecture by introducing the Dubai Traffic Prosecution and discussed their responsibilities regarding traffic accidents resulting in deaths and injuries in addition to the actions taken against traffic offences.
He commended that the initiative "Together towards a Culture of Legal Traffic" is supported by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice-President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai; it is specifically targeted to secondary school and university students to raise awareness.
The lecture also included an explanation of some traffic laws such as driving without a license and under the influence of alcohol, the need to stay on the scene when a traffic accident resulting in injuries has occurred, among others; the penalties for each type of traffic offense are clearly stated in the state laws.
Bu Faroosha also presented attendees with statistics explaining that a drop in traffic offenses and accidents had occurred since the new traffic laws were enforced. He concluded the session with very graphic pictures of latest and most terrible road accidents, to raise ever more awareness among the students, as most accidents had happened because of excess speed or burning red lights, and such. A Q&A session followed, where students took the opportunity to discuss incidents which actually took place and request information from the Chief Prosecutor.
Students also noted that the traffic laws should be translated in order to allow foreigners to fully understand the local laws; a project which will be planned for through an agreement between the University and the Traffic Prosecution, as both share a keenness to serve the interests of society. A volunteer program is being planned by AUD students. Other ideas discussed included teaching traffic laws and conducting awareness campaigns.
