  A killing in Dubai
  March 13th, 2010

Last August, the Taliban's chief terrorist in Pakistan, Baitullah Mehsud, made a bad decision. Suffering from a kidney ailment, he chose his father-in-law's farmhouse rooftop in Pakistan to take an IV drip.

A CIA drone aircraft spotted him and fired a missile. Boom!

It was a targeted killing, and most of the world shrugged. Or cheered.

In January, Hamas mastermind Mahmoud al-Mabhouh was smothered to death in his hotel room in Dubai.

Al-Mabhouh was high on Israel's wanted list for plotting the kidnapping and murder of two Israeli soldiers and reportedly playing a role in the smuggling of Iranian arms into Gaza.

Dubai authorities blame Mossad, Israel's intelligence agency. The Israelis won't confirm or deny, as is their practice.

While the drone attack on Mehsud was a model of American technological prowess, the al-Mabhouh operation looked to be borrowed from a John le Carre spy thriller. Except Le Carre's spies are usually better at covering their tracks.

This was a meticulously planned hit involving at least 26 agents in Dubai. They carried phony passports from Britain, Ireland, France and Germany. The assassins, in wigs and fake beards, stalked their target for hours. When the time came, they injected al-Mabhouh with a muscle relaxant and suffocated him. They slipped away, leaving no signs of a struggle.

Ironically, the hit team might have been too meticulous in making the death appear natural, Newsweek recently reported. The scene was so immaculate that it raised the suspicions of Dubai police.

Now Dubai authorities have released an extensive array of evidence connected to the hit, including forged passport numbers and photographs from video surveillance. Apparently, they have some technological prowess themselves, perhaps more than the assassins anticipated.
