A total of 926 beach pests have been arrested so far this year for being a public nuisance, a security official has said.
Mohammed Rashid Al Muhairi, director of the Tourist Security Department, told the Khaleej Times, the people had been bothering tourists sunbathing on Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim beaches.
Some of those arrested were found also to be violating residency and immigration laws and were subsequently deported, he said.
A total of 213 people were arrested for public nuisance offences in April, while 147 people were arrested in March and 188 in February, Al Muhairi said.
He told the paper that a further 1,311 people have been arrested for trying to con tourists out of money. One person was arrested for claiming to practice magic using a rooster’s beak to cheat tourists.
Al Muhairi said the department was continuing to inform tourists about local traditions and had arrested some people for indecency.
“We arrested a British national of Pakistani origin who was accompanied by two females and was caught at Umm Suqeim near Burj Al Arab. Both women were wearing indecent dresses and were referred to the port police station for public prosecution.”
