  8/3/2006 9:16:18 AM

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority has announced that construction work on one of the most congested highways between Dubai and Sharjah, Al Ittihad Road, would start within a few months.

According to the Gulf News, Al Ittihad Road, which is used by more than 200,000 vehicles per day, will be turned into an expressway from the Sharjah-Dubai border to Al Garhoud Bridge.

Construction of the 7.5 km stretch of Al Ittihad Road project will cost Dh700 million.

According to details provided earlier by Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the board and chief executive officer at RTA, Al Ittihad Road will be an eight-lane expressway with four lanes on each side and there will be additional three to four lanes on each side to cater for local traffic movement in Dubai.

He said the new project would reduce traffic congestion by 58 per cent.

The project includes the development of eight expressway lanes and the building of additional service lanes on each side.

There will be total of 13 to 17 lanes on both sides of the road at different locations.

The project involves upgrading Al Nahda roundabout (Al Mulla Plaza roundabout) into an intersection with increase of tunnel lanes from the existing six to eight.

A new bridge linking Al Wuheida Road to Al Nahda Road and another bridge linking Al Nahda Road with Ittihad Road will also be built to ensure the smooth flow of traffic from all directions.

The project also includes a massive improvement plan for Al Qiyada Roundabout. The existing tunnel at Al Qiyada Interchange will be upgraded to four lanes in each direction.

The project also involves upgrading the Airport Road Interchange. The existing two lane tunnel on each side will be upgraded to a four-lane tunnel.

A new bridge will also be built at Al Shoula Interchange to aid motorists travelling on service roads after the Al Qiyada Interchange on the approach to Al Ittihad Road.

Statistics from the RTA shows that the number of vehicles registered in Dubai has increased to 635,000 and around one million vehicles use Dubai roads daily with an average of almost 500,000 on the road during working hours.

More than 350,000 trips are made daily between Sharjah and Dubai of which 200,000 are on Al Ittihad Road. Around 9,000 vehicles use this road per hour.
