As part of the Dubai Summer Surprise Festival, a Flower Surprises Week was organised by the Dubai Government, at which the Dubai Tamil Family in association with Indian Association gave a live demonstration of a Tamil marriage.
"We started with the ceremonial meeting of the bride and prospective bridegroom, followed by the engagement, kasi yatra, garland exchange, swing (oonjal), muhurtham and nilangu. People from all over the world witnessed the show with enthusiasm. They all took lots of flowers at the end of the programme. Seervarisaigal and nagaswaram were arranged for this programme," according to R.S.Ramani, President, Dubai Tamil Family.
The re-enactment of the Tamil wedding took place in "IBN Batuta Mall" on August 11. "This is the first time in Dubai that such a programme took place," said S.Venkatesh, Secretary of the organisation, which is celebrating its 10th year.
400 kilos of flowers
To highlight the grand scale of the weddings involving lot of floral decorations, the re-enacted wedding used 400 kilos of flowers. This also suited the "Flower Surprise Week" theme.
"Those who enacted the lead roles of the groom and bride are Krishnan and Anu (who were recently married). It is a rare opportunity for them to play the sale roles a second time," Mr. Ramani said.
Mr. Sivaramakrishnan played the role of the priest (sastrigal). All those who played the different roles of relatives of the bride and bridegroom were members of the Dubai Tamil Family.
"All of them wore the traditional dress, especially ladies with the typical jewellery displays common in our marriages," Mr. Venkatesh added.
