As a city focused on life’s luxuries, the opening of the new Dubai Flower Centre (DFC) will come as a waft of fresh air to many. The dhs 257 million facility is no ordinary flower shop though. Rather, it is a state-of-the-art, strategically located, trans-shipment facility for perishable goods, vital to the UAE in terms of its imports of perishable goods, such as flowers, fruit and veg from abroad and which would easily perish in the UAE’s searing heat.
So far, the DFC said it has handled a total volume of 3475 tonnes of perishables in its first ten days of operation. DFC, which operates as a free zone next to Dubai’s airport Cargo Village, aims to achieve seamless and prompt delivery of perishables from the producer to the end consumer and has the capacity to handle 180,000 tonnes of perishable products a year.
DFC was designed as a trans-shipment hub, and the main handling operations for import, export and transit take place on the ground floor of the facility. Rapid and efficient handling is aided by a fully automatic system that safeguards quality and maximises shelf life. Currently, all perishable transit cargo from Emirates Airlines is handled by DFC.
The facility uses turnkey solutions to ensure the implementation of the “cool chain process from the aircraft arrival until pick-up by consignee, together with additional services such as vacuum cooling, rapid cooling, storage at different temperatures and hermetically-sealed bays for ethylene producing products”. |
