Dubai malls center of DSS activity |

In its nine years of existence it has morphed itself into an enviable brand of sizeable stature.
But a large part of the credit for this success story goes to the numerous glitzy shopping malls of the city. Come summer and they effectively turn into venues for the most happening DSS activities and events attracting both shoppers and visitors, especially children, the target group of DSS. Their ample space, climate controlled pleasant interiors and salubrious environs are perfect for carrying out DSS events. It is through them that DSS events fan out to include a wide cross-section of society irrespective of age, nationality or interests.
These in-mall events truly represent the spirit of DSS and they go a long way in integrating the summer fiesta with the mainstream shopping and leisure facilities of Dubai. Given here is a cursory list which will definitely allow families to plan out their summer schedule according to their area of interest.
The Collectors Exhibition to be held for the second time from July 7 to 16 between 10am and 10pm will bring together collectors of various objects under one roof in BurJuman (new extension) and is bound to appeal to all memorabilia lovers and even shoppers who would like to just glance through the rare collection while the Disney Magic to be held from July 15 to 28 between 4pm and 10pm at the Mall of the Emirates will bring original Disney classics and endearing Disney characters to town.
The World of Stories, will come alive from July 28 to August 4 at Mercato Shopping Mall in the evenings between 4pm to 10pm. From August 20 to 26 between 5pm to 9 pm, the massive China Court at Ibn Batutta Mall will host the Kids Olympic Games.
The Photography Exhibition, now in its second appearance at the DSS, will run from August 14 to 19 at BurJuman between 10am and 10pm and will showcase the talent of professionals and amateurs under one roof. Barbie House activities will begin at Reef Mall starting July12-28 from 4pm to 10pm.
The three-day long Sheila and Abaya Fashion Shows from August 16 to 18 scheduled from 6pm onwards will see the best talent in the industry converge at BurJuman to showcase the metamorphosis of the traditional Arab garment. Models will sashay down the ramp showcasing the latest trends in the traditional Sheilas and Abayas.
Of nearly 22 malls that will participate in DSS this year, a majority of the activities are to be centred around Mall of the Emirates, BurJuman, Ibn Battuta Centre, Deira City Centre Mercato, Al Ghurair City, Reef Mall, Al Bustan Center, Bin Bougat Center, Hamarain Center, Lamcy Plaza, Wafi City etc. Each of these malls are spread out all over Dubai and thus cater to everyone of the residents and visitors and with new malls rising out of the sand every year, the number of malls becoming the cynosure of attention for tourists and residents alike is on the rise.
The Mall of the Emirates is a new and happening mall in the UAE today and a large part of DSS action is to be centred around here. It will host numerous inauguration ceremonies and the opening ceremonies for the Ice, Food, Adventure, Cartoon, Nature, Flower and Back-2-School Surprises weeks will all be held there. The Mall of the Emirates which is home to Ski Dubai, is also the perfect venue to host events like the 3d Ice Games, the Ice Queen Show, the Ice Wonderland Maiden along with the International Restaurant Show, the Chinese Adventure Show, the Big Brothers Show and The Fitfoot City shows also taking place over here.
The Ibn Batutta Mall, another brand new mall that opened less than two years ago is another vital DSS venue. Themed around the renowned 14th century Arabian explorer of the same name, it features six courts that reflect the most influential places Ibn Battuta travelled to during his time. Servicing residents living in New Dubai, DSS reaches out to residents through this fabulous mall which is all set to play host to the Kids Olympic games, a Scientific Workshop, Baskin Robbins X Zone, The International Food Carnival, and numerous events of Adventure Surprises Week including Paintless Paintball, Rodeo Competition, Pinnacle Competition and the Acrobatic show, Animal Show and several events from the Cartoon Surprises and Nature Surprises weeks.
BurJuman is one of Dubai's older malls and it plays a crucial role as a DSS participant as it is centrally located and extremely well known amongst tourists and residents. This year it will host the Collector's Exhibition, the Photography Exhibition and the Sheila and Abaya Shows. Besides these, 13 events from the Ice Surprises include the Ice Magician, the Acrobat Exhibition, the Penguin Workshop and the Moving Balloons Show. It will also run the Around the World Treasure Hunt and the Acrobatic Show and the Animal Show. In fact, every themed DSS week will have something or the other happening at this popular mall.
The Deira City Centre, situated in the busiest area of Dubai, is today literally an important part of every tourist's shopping itinerary. Naturally, it becomes important from the DSS point of view as well. The Shatoor Tent Show, The Mono Cycle Show, the Ice Queen Show, The Ice Magician, The Golden Ticket Show, the Cartoon Carnival, the Great Birds Spectacle and The Dubai Trees Speak are only some of the events this destination will host as a DSS participant.
The Al Ghurair City on the other hand needs no introduction as it is renowned as the 'oldest' mall in Dubai. Its refurbished look makes it just another perfect DSS destination and like the rest it is to host a wide variety of events across the DSS calendar of events. Some of these are the Monocycle Show, the 3D Computer Games Competition, the Amazed by Maze Competition, the Jugglers Show, the Carsoon v/s Reem Show, the Garden Corner Workshop, the Fitfoot Worker Events, the Wonder Spa and the Interactive Science Booths. No wonder the Al Ghurair City is the perfect centralised location to enjoy DSS.
The Reef Mall will host the ever popular Barbie House from July 12 to 28. From August 22 to August 28 the sprawling mall premises transforms into an art gallery with the spectacular Art Oasis which will host several exhibitions, demos and workshops for the artistically inclined. A number of other entertainment and educational activities are also being held at this mall based on the themed weeks.
Al Bustan Center will host the Ice Queen shows and Mono Cycle Shows on June 21 and June 28 respectively besides other activities while the Bin Sougat Center will house the Min Beladi "Al Emarat" Traditional competition from July 19 to 28 to give a touch of traditional charm to DSS activities.
Hamarain Center holds a Scientific Workshop from July 21 to 28 besides other activities and promotions. It will also invite the ice magician on June 24 during the Ice Surprises Week and hosts skits and ice shows in the month of June in its premises.
The Lamcy Plaza stages several Arabic plays during the month of July as well as the much-awaited Cartoon Carnival. From August 3 to 9 the mall will throb with techno events while Wafi City inspires the adventurous natured with Extreme Motor event on June 24.
The 10-week long DSS, which opens with Ice Surprises week on June 21, will continue with the weekly themes such as Arts Surprises, International Food Surprises, Adventure Surprises, Cartoon Surprises, Nature Surprises, Knowledge Surprises, Flower Surprises, Heritage Surprises and concludes with Back-to-School Surprises on September 1.
