Two more bridges by 2009 to ease Dubai traffic |

 Dubai: Two new bridges, deemed as city landmarks, will be built over Dubai Creek as part of Roads and Transport Authority's plans to ease traffic congestion.
The bridges, which will cost Dh1 billion, will have 24 lanes altogether. The existing crossings have 19 lanes. One of them, Al Shindagah Bridge, will be built next to Al Shindagah tunnel while the second bridge will connect Omar Bin Khattab Road in Deira to Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Road in Bur Dubai.
His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has approved the construction of the bridges, which are expected to be ready by end of 2008, Mattar Al Tayer, Chief Executive Officer of the RTA, told a press conference yesterday.
The new bridges will help ease traffic congestion on the existing three crossings over the Dubai Creek. Currently, some 16,000 vehicles cross Dubai creek per hour per direction and this capacity is expected to increase to 43,000 vehicles per hour per direction by 2020. "We mean business. We don't just talk for whatever we say, we are implementing it," said Al Tayer.
"We are working on several other issues such as new legislation on road usage, car registration, dynamic road signage system and improvement of public transport to ease traffic problem," he said.
